Udawalawe is most famous for National park and Elephant transit home. Elephant Transit Home (ETH) takes care of orphaned elephant calves until they are independent and able enough to be released back to the wild. With minimum resources and manpower, ETH has successfully grown to be a successful entity in a short period. It has been recognized as one of best wild animal rehabilitation centers in the world.
UdaWalwe National Park, Sri Lanka is one of the best place in Asia to see herds of Asian Elephants, the pachyderms in the wild. It is based with Modern man made Rain water reservoir and river Walawe. It retains their leaves even during the dry season. The park is home to sloth bear, porcupine, jungle cat, languor, pangolin, fox giant, macaque, jackal, sambar, leopard, water buffalo, spotted deer, barking deer, crocodile, wild boar, mongoose, bandicoot, flying squirrel & water monitor lizard. Udawalawe is undoubtedly the best place in Sri Lanka to see wild Asian Elephants throughout the year: there are about 500 elephants in the park and they often roam in herds of up to 100.
